I was just sitting here thinking (which can be dangerous sometimes lol) what happened to pen pals? I use to have 'em all over the world when I was a kid. What if we did that here? Maybe have our kids write a mini-profile about themselves and we can arrange for them to write to each other. And by mini-profile i mean : name, age, location, interests. Keep it simple. My girls are willing. (they are 9 and 12 by the way) And it can be either snail mail (old school way :) ) or e-mail..
What do you think?
If yes, then I'll start.....
Miah (girl) 9 years old - b-day 6-14
4th grade
California
Is a blue belt in taekwondo, loves art, dancing, music, reading, acting, origami and computers (and more)
Kyla (girl) 12 years old - b-day 3-20
7th grade
California
Is a Level 6 competitive rhythmic gymnast (and has gone to nationals 2 years in a row!), takes ballet, loves reading, music, computers, art, making friendship bracelets and other things for her friends and for sale, loves to crochet (and more)
If you'd like your child to write to either (or both) of mine send me a message.
If this doesn't work, that's fine too, but it was worth a try!!!
:)

Re: Pen Pals for the kids
Tue, September 11, 2007 - 8:56 PMWow, yes, I DO remember pen-pals. I had several around the world as a child. It was a thrill for me to finally see that envelope arrive in the mail. Would it contain a photo? A drawing? Some kind of fancy paper? I was fascinated with each and every piece of post. Sadly, those days seem to be gone. My son has little interest in typing online.....phoooey. Write a letter? Are you kidding? I can barely get him to do his homework! ;)
I'll have to ask him what he thinks of the snail mail idea. Sometimes it's fun to find trinkets of articles from local papers and enclose them in notes, or to find a feather, or something that is just interesting for the day and thus should be shared.
I'll let you know what my 9 year old says (if I can get him off the xbox live or out of the pool)

Tue, September 11, 2007 - 9:05 PMWhat an awesome idea, however, I am very leary to share info like this about my kids on the internet. Not sure how we could do it another way though....hmmm...I'll think about it.

Sun, January 27, 2008 - 10:59 PMHowdy Jessica
I was just wondering how this went? I think my daughter would like to meet kids overseas but like Kiti Kat I am very (very very very) cautious to give out her details over the internet. -

Re: Pen Pals for the kids
Tue, September 2, 2008 - 12:29 PMits a lovely idea. snail mail is becoming a lost art. when mine was small i got her into the habit of making her own postcards to send to relatives & chosen family.
now she can write so the postcards are more than a picture on one side & the address on the other.
its a little nervy passing out our address though. i'd feel better if we private messaged address info after we find someone the right age to connect with. -

Thu, December 11, 2008 - 12:08 PMPetmore and everyone else lol
no one wanted to do it. everyone was too afraid to share addresses which is fine, i just thought it was a good idea since snail mail is very scarce these days.
oh well :) -

Re: Pen Pals for the kids
Wed, December 17, 2008 - 12:07 AMI dont' mind giving you her details. im not sure her email account is still active so we'd probably have to create a new one but i won't give it openly. if you or others want to contact me privately i'll give you an address you can contact her (or my son) at but obvously i'd vet all emails (and assume you'd do the same).
i can't gaurenette how long she's keep emailing for though, she's lazy like me.

Re: Pen Pals for the kids
Mon, February 16, 2009 - 12:59 AMHey there. I was just talking to my girl and her little friends about pen pals and how much fun they are! Too bad I wasn't on tribe when u posted this. But I'm here now, so I figured I'd give it a shot. My daughter is always begging me to find her someone to send cards and letters to...but also like the other lady...I can be a bit lazy about getting them out! Maybe the chat idea might be good (But privately somehow, of course.)
So here is her info...
Makayla age 9 loves to draw, arts & crafts, loves kitties, catches bugs (especially ladybugs-she "adopts" them out
3rd grade to kids at school), she cheers and takes hip hop dance, and she is a spunky red headed sagittarius
....and my son's...
Jeremiah (J.D.) [7-13] age 5 1/2 loves to bug his sister!, plays t-ball, just started karate, video games, leggos, bionicles, and
kindergarten all other manner of boylike funstuff
So, if u or anyone else is still interested in this idea...maybe we could find a way to do & monitor this properly.

Re: Pen Pals for the kids
Mon, February 16, 2009 - 7:05 AMMy son said he would like to do it also. He'd get a kick out of marking it on a map!
Hes almost 8; will be on March 2 which also happens to be Dr. Seuss's birthday ")
He loves art, reading, Sponge Bob and Chowder, Funkeys, and downloading his own games, playing outside and walking at night.
My little girl just made 3 but she'd enjoy doing it because big brother is doing it and of course she's into art and receiving things also.
I think this is a great idea.
