My friend has a 14 year old girl who just have her first period 3 months ago. The problem is that it hasn't stopped since. The doctor did some test and x-rays but don't see anything abnormal and can't explain it. She's getting very fatigue - understandablely. Anyone heard of this??

Re: Period won't stop for 14 year old.
Wed, December 19, 2007 - 11:42 AMI've never heard of anything like that.
Second opinion, definitely. A cause to worry about anemia, likely.
I hope she finds the answers soon!

Wed, December 19, 2007 - 12:30 PMHmmm. Yes, get a second or third or fourth opinion if necessary. Did they put her on an iron supplement? SlowFE is a great one. -

Re: Period won't stop for 14 year old.
Wed, December 19, 2007 - 1:51 PMAlways check to see what meds or pills she is on. If not on a pill, that might be an option. Iron is good, try eating more iron rich food for the best intake. Pills can up it quicker. I dont know much about this, but my wife would bleed a while longer if the iron was down.

Re: Period won't stop for 14 year old.
Fri, December 21, 2007 - 1:05 PMA second opinion is needed. Perhaps there is a ped-adolescent specialist who can help. Letting her bleed for 4 months is not an acceptable outcome, esp if they haven't tried med therapy yet. She's tired probably because she's anemic.
Birth-control pills may be indicated, to get her hormones more balanced. I know some people may be anti-pills, but it's something to seriously consider.

Re: Period won't stop for 14 year old.
Sun, December 23, 2007 - 8:55 PMshe needs to see a pediatric edocronoligist. Edos specilize in the edocrin system, thats the part of the body that makes hormones, unfortuantly GYNs do not always specilaize in this type of issue. I have heard of this and its not that uncommon actually, many women have issues with very irregular periods and some have issues with periods that do not end.
if this dr. is not taking action she needs a diffrent doc. -

Re: Period won't stop for 14 year old.
Sat, January 19, 2008 - 10:10 PMI had this same problem when I was 13 years old. After several months, I ultimately ended up passing out, at which point I was put on the birth control pill. I was only on it for a few months and have had totally regular periods since! [I'm 22 now..] I am not an advocate for "the pill" but at this point, it sounds like she has lost so much blood that she could pass out like I did.

Re: Period won't stop for 14 year old.
Sun, February 3, 2008 - 7:20 PMwell.. it wasn't my first period but when i was in college my period didn't stop for over 3 weeks so went to my doc. went on the pill and it regulated me. i went off the pill in a couple months and was regular again. she said it was a hormone imbalance - possibly caused by stress or imbalance of diet/exercise/etc.
good luck!

Re: Period won't stop for 14 year old.
Sat, February 9, 2008 - 11:59 AMWow that sounds crazy. Maybe try some St. Johns wort teas. Try eating foods with a good amount of vitamin K, Iron and protien, lay off junk food and try the holistic approach. I would still try for a second opinion. -

Re: Period won't stop for 14 year old.
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 8:27 PMI was given chaste tree and berry. Wouldn't recommend taking anything without talking to an herbalist but it happened to me alot, and I had to also take herbs to regulate my cycle, which eventually stopped the really long periods. Herbs work great for womanly stuff.

Re: Period won't stop for 14 year old.
Sat, June 7, 2008 - 11:05 PMVitex,Vitex,Vitex- ie Chaste Tree Berry. One of the best, most effective and safest hormone balancers available. While the pill may stop
the bleeding and temporarily regulate the hormonal imbalance it will not treat her constitutionally or alter the underlying cause. Herbs go deeper than pharmaceuticals, they may just take some time to effect long lasting change. They are safer as well and do not create a deep
dependence, they help the body to gently change a condition and then help to correct the situation.
Floridex is an herbal liquid iron supplement which would also help in this situation to build the iron back up in her system. The fact that an MD would let this go on with just some tests says quite a bit, but do try to find a reputable herbalist if the girls parents are open to this.
I am an herbalist in MA, and can say that Vitex is truly a heal all when it comes to hormones. Liquid is best, taken first thing upon waking1/2 tsp
to start and then again mid day another 1/2 tsp. See how that goes and stay on it, you will see results. staying on it for 6-12 months is really effective with Vitex, with 1 week off per 3 month cycle. Avena Botanicals has this single extract blend and they have one of the best herbal product lines around- avenabotanicals.com.
Hope this is helpful and that this girl gets what she needs asap!!!

Re: Period won't stop for 14 year old.
Tue, June 24, 2008 - 8:50 PMI got an updated now... After many months of working with Western doctors and not accomplishing anything, her mother finally took her to a Chinese Herbalist. He prescribed a herbal blend - don't know what it is exactly, but after a few days her period eventally stopped and her energy level back the way a teenage girl should be. Her cycle is more normal, but everytime she gets her period, she needs to take the herbal blend again for a couple of days until her next period. -

Re: Period won't stop for 14 year old.
Fri, January 9, 2009 - 11:08 AMgive thanks, I was just reading the thread for the first time and thought accupuncture/herbs or ayurvedic medicine would be a much better option than the pill (which messed with my system as a 15year old, but that's another story). I've just been reading "Ayurvedic Healing for Women" and it has a section on bleeding that won't stop, if you're interested to look into it as well, tho with such cases it's best to see a live practitioner for personalized care, particularly in the young. Be sure to recommend she keeps her iron levels up now- in the plant world that is accomplished with the red foods- yams, steamed beets (raw doesn't deliver the same iron content), dates, and steamed leafy green vegetables. peace
